Thought for the Week 20 October 2019

Anglican Mothers Union Australia

Overcoming poverty

Jesus said, ‘Blessed are you that are poor’. (Luke 6:20). Why did he challenge the Jewish belief that poverty was a sign of God’s displeasure or looked at another way, that riches were the rewards of the righteous? We know just how much we love shopping: in our society it is a sport, a diversion, and certainly what we deserve for all our hard work – and good fortune. We accumulate so much that in Adelaide Anglicare has asked for no more donations of clothes. Are we like Dives in the parable and are having all our goodies now?

I know that the Lord maintains the cause of the needy, and executes justice for the poor. Psalm 140:12

With prayer at the heart of Mothers’ Union in Scotland, members provide for the poor and needy. They collect items for women in prison and have handbags of goods to present on their release. Members are also concerned to raise awareness of domestic abuse.
