Joys and challenges
Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,
My daily labour to pursue;
you, Lord, alone only resolved to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.
Each task your wisdom has assigned,
still let me cheerfully fulfil,
In all my works you presence find,
and prove your good and perfect will.
Preserve me from my calling’s snare,
And hide my simple heart above,
Above the thorns of choking care,
The gilded baits of worldly love.
You may I set at my right hand,
whose eyes my inmost substance see,
and labour on at you command,
and offer all my works to you.
Give me to bear your easy yoke,
and every moment watch and pray,
and still to things eternal look,
and hasten to your glorious day;
for you delightfully employ
All that your bounteous grace has given,
and run my course with even joy, and closely walk with you to heaven
TiS 571 reproduced with permission
The most challenging verse of this hymn of joys and challenges is verse 3. It is omitted in AHB 480 and TiS 571. Charles Wesley’s faith made keen by self examination and self awareness are very evident. He has given us a veritable treasure with which to meditate.
My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. James 1:2-3
AMARE in Argentina has accepted the challenge of mediating in situations needing conflict resolution. Joys and challenges are involved in supporting and discipling families. We offer our prayers to God for their work.
